Description

Roving to spin your own custom Vintage yarn!

If you haven't spun minimally-processed farm roving before, you're in for a treat. Small mills use low-impact scouring methods that preserve all the woolly character of a fleece. This roving is open and lofty and drafts like a dream.

Vintage No. 11 Roving is available in Stone, Moonlight, and Hickory. The unique blend of natural colored Shetland fleeces, ramie fiber, and tussah silk results in roving with highlights of color and texture that makes spinning these neutral shades anything but boring.

Ramie is a fiber made from the inner bark of Boehmeria nivea, a plant in the nettle family. Fiber from ramie is longer and finer than flax, with silk-like shimmer. When blended with wool and silk, ramie creates space between fibers, keeping the yarn from becoming compacted and overspun. The finished yarn will be breathable while maintaining its shape. Ramie, known as mosi in Korean, is one of the oldest fibers in the world. Learn more about traditional Korean ramie spinning and weaving on the UNESCSO site

Suitable for spinning both fine worsted yarn and thicker soft-spun woolen yarn.

  • 80% Shetland wool from my flock and nearby farms
  • 12% Ramie fiber
  • 8% Tussah silk
  • 4 oz/113 g.

As with all Vintage yarns, fleeces and rovings are hand-selected as the best of its kind and for the unique qualities it contributes to the final blend. I look for fibers that are are extremely soft but resistant to pilling. Minimal and gentle processing without the use of harsh chemicals means that there will be vegetable matter, but it also means that the fiber retains its sheepy characteristics and organic, bouncy handle.
